After graduating from Haverford College with a degree in sociology, James E Carter, MD, obtained his medical degree at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and internal medicine training at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, subsequently completing fellowships in cardiology at University of Chicago and interventional cardiology at University of Maryland.

After many years serving in community-based private practice, he was recruited to join Cleveland Clinic from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he was associate professor of medicine in cardiology and vascular biology. He was core curriculum faculty and director of the Health Equity, Policy, and Advocacy Pathway for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. He ran the Cardiovascular Systems Case Review Collaborative for the Division of Cardiology and was Chair, Educational Programming, for the Colorado Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. He serves on the American College of Cardiology Credentialling and Membership Committee and was recently named co-chair of the Society for Vascular Medicine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and former board member of the Association of Black Cardiologists. 

Board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, vascular medicine, and an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner, Dr. Carter focuses on social vulnerabilities of health, health equity, systems biology, and lifestyle modification to help patients with prevention, healing, and recovery. He believes in optimizing the pursuit of joy by centering on the patient perspective while remaining mindful of community health.
