Hormone Functional Medicine Advanced Practice Modules® (APM)
Restoring hormonal balance to the hypothalamic, pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and gonadal axis
Conference Overview
Hormones play a vital role in the body by signaling specific biological processes in cells, tissues, and organ systems responsible for glycemic control and metabolism, reproductive function, energy production, sleep, and more. Before considering hormone replacement therapy, what if there were another way to naturally modulate hormones in alignment with a patient’s biochemical makeup, genetic history, and lifestyle? Functional medicine prioritizes a root-cause approach to identifying and addressing the underlying processes contributing to hormonal dysfunction. By looking upstream to the wide variety of ways that the hypothalamic, pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and gonadal (HPATG) axis modulates health, you will learn how to identify and address issues with the production, transport, or processing of these hormones.
The Hormone APM equips you with comprehensive diagnostic and evaluation strategies to determine the unique causes of hormone imbalance in each patient. From there, you’ll gain new tools to deliver personalized care by applying dietary modifications, nutraceutical supplementation, and other lifestyle modifications as primary and adjunctive care strategies.
New Online Cohort Format – Learn at Your Own Pace!
The Hormone APM is now offered as a six-week online cohort course! Learners can access course materials and review lectures when it is most convenient for them. The new format expands access to functional medicine education, allowing clinicians to balance the demands of their practice and their training.
Learning Objectives
Advanced Practice Modules apply the foundational tools presented in Applying Functional in Medicine Clinical Practice (AFMCP)TM within a specific area of health. At the Hormone APM, you'll learn how to:
- Apply interventions that can improve both hormone and autonomic balance.
- Minimize the need for hormone replacement therapy by applying treatments that improve hormone function, including dietary, lifestyle, and mind-body interventions.
- Identify and address the underlying causes of imbalances in all endocrine organs.
- Choose and use reliable biomarkers to assess hormone function.
- Systematically evaluate hormone dysfunction with greater precision and personalization.
- Prescribe bioidentical hormone therapy that is personalized and minimizes risks.
- Apply a personalized, precision approach to breast cancer prevention.
- Identify adrenal dysfunction and apply personalized, precision therapeutic strategies.
- Use an expanded panel of biomarkers to identify thyroid dysfunction even when TSH is normal.
- Identify and address subtle indicators of testosterone deficiency and female hormone imbalances.
- Engage your patients in meaningful dialogue about their health concerns, learning techniques to improve communication and treatment adherence.
- Expand upon the functional medicine tools and concepts presented in Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP)TM and pursue functional medicine certification.

What would you tell your friends or colleagues about the Hormone APM?
This APM is excellent for learning the upstream and far-reaching consequences of hormones in the body. It is presented in a well-researched, honestly open manner about pros and cons. I would highly recommend to any practitioner."
Every health practitioner should take the Hormone Advanced Practice Module. It helps to focus the common patient complaints in a more functional way, making real changes and understanding their real root causes."
This course gives us more tools as physicians trained in standard Western medicine so we can not only listen better to our patients with hormone concerns (gather more information), but actually make a difference in their lives and health. I'm thrilled I took this course and although I'm still learning, it really did change how I approached so many problems on my next clinic day after the course ended."
The Hormone APM was among my favorite courses given its blend of understanding the root causes (genetic and epigenetic) and lifestyle factors that can trigger and address hormonal concerns. This was an extremely valuable course to inform the ways we work with patients through personalized diagnostic strategies and therapeutic strategies ranging from nutritional and botanical to hormone replacement, along with the supporting evidence to inform clinical decision-making and patient collaboration."
