Details

Explore clinical topics from IFM’s 2017 Annual International Conference about the most recent scientific evidence on the ways in which neuroplasticity can be harnessed and optimized to prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases, brain injury, stroke, and mental disorders.

IFM's 2017 Annual Conference Proceedings connect you to the latest research and clinical tools on neuroplasticity, neurodegeneration, and brain health.

Neurodegenerative and other brain disorders are already a significant public health issue, and this is only expected to increase in the coming years. Once thought of as an unchanging, static organ, we now know that the brain continues to reorganize itself throughout life by forming new neurons and new neural connections. Healing the damaged brain is more possible than we ever imagined.

The 2017 Annual International Conference Proceedings collect lectures on the actionable steps clinicians can take with patients who present with neurodegenerative conditions, as well as for those who are concerned about or at risk for neurodegeneration. Lectures include discussions on the factors that promote neurodegeneration and presentations on clinical steps to help patients avoid, minimize, or mitigate their impact.

Key Takeaways

Factors that increase brain neurogenesis and neuroplasticity:

  • Dietary changes, including discussion of factors that inhibit and enhance neuroplasticity
  • Nutraceuticals/botanicals that support brain function and mitochondria
  • Physical activity and exercise, including specifics of duration, intensity, etc. for neuroplastic change
  • The human gut microbiome: prebiotics/probiotics/diet
  • Mindfulness-based meditation: the idea that ‘mental states become neural traits’ and how to change mental states
  • Brain stimulation exercises using online apps
  • Low-resolution electromagnetic tomography neurofeedback (LORETA NF)
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

Factors that increase neurodegenerative processes (and how to minimize or overcome them):

  • Environmental toxins: pesticides, metals, solvents, PCBs, and other halogenated organic compounds
  • Practical ways to decrease exposure and improve biotransformation
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) such as concussions and mild non-concussive events
  • Practical ways to evaluate and discuss therapeutic approaches to minimize these repeated head injuries, and when they happen, ways to decrease the risks that ensue
  • Effects of TBI on the gut-brain axis
  • Genetic single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that put one at more risk and approaches you can take to minimize risk
