Join IFM educators and your colleagues on October 7– 9, 2022 in Scottsdale for IFM’s newest program.

For many years, practitioners have requested a hands-on program that guides clinicians through the process of building clinical skills in the practice of functional medicine. After three years of successful beta testing, IFM is excited to announce a new in-person Clinical Skills Training (CST) workshop that meets clinicians where they are on the functional medicine path and provides direct feedback and clinical consultation from expert clinicians on cases drawn from your own practice.

Clinical Skills Training (CST) is an in-person workshop that provides an opportunity to come together and learn new functional medicine clinical skills and applications. This two-and-a-half-day program is designed for practitioners who have taken IFM’s foundational course, Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP), and will be offered three times in 2022 at a limited time introductory price. This highly interactive, hands-on, case-based workshop provides a unique opportunity to hone and elevate your clinical skills by presenting cases from your practice (that you have prepared in advance) in facilitated small groups and receiving feedback from experienced, IFM-certified functional medicine clinicians.

Program Highlights

The program will be two and a half days long, Friday-Sunday, plus an optional evening activity on Thursday. Participants will prepare (in advance) a timeline and matrix from two patients in their own practices. These will be presented to peers in small groups facilitated by experienced, IFM-certified functional medicine practitioners. Additionally, there will be live question and answer sessions with IFM educators interspersed between the case workshops. Industry members from the functional medicine ecosystem will present short, 20-minute presentations about the latest trends in functional medicine at the conclusion of days one and two.

Seating is limited, and the program does not carry CME credit—in order to allow for an open and specific exchange of diagnostic and therapeutic options among the program participants and faculty.

Program Benefits:
  • Elevate and hone your clinical skills with hands-on training among peers and expert functional medicine clinicians.
  • Ask direct questions of IFM educators and get answers to the vexing, real-life cases that have been most challenging.
  • Interact face-to-face with IFM’s most talented and inspiring educators in a small group environment.
  • Receive the small-group case consultations, peer mentoring, and guidance from expert educators that our attendees have long requested.
  • Experience an open exchange of diagnostic and therapeutic options, including the personal preferences of IFM educators, in a non-CME environment.
  • Learn about the latest innovations from industry and the functional medicine ecosystem, plus have direct access to representatives of these organizations onsite to answer your questions.
  • Cultivate new relationships with like-minded professionals with whom you can collaborate and form lasting professional relationships.
  • See how educators and your peers are using the IFM Toolkit in their own practices.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How long is the program?
A: The CST training will be two and a half days. There will be optional activities on Thursday night, but the CST sessions will run from 8:00 am–5:00 pm Friday and Saturday and 8:00 am–3:00 pm on Sunday.

Q: Is this program required for IFM Certification?
A: No, not at this time, but it is very valuable training for anyone on the IFM Certified Practitioner (IFMCP) path.

Q: Does it offer CME?
A: No, this program will not carry CME credit because the facilitators will mention the specific names of labs and supplements they use or recommend and also because it specifically and deeply teaches “how to apply” functional medicine, which is CME-ineligible.

Q: Are there prerequisites? Why?
A: Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) is the only prerequisite; AFMCP provides the tools and framework to help understand how to work up a patient using the functional medicine matrix and timeline as well as the GOTOIT model. This course presumes attendees know this and have already begun working with patients using these tools. In fact, attendees will come to the training with an already completed timeline and matrix from a functional medicine patient.

Q: Who is this course for? What medical degrees are qualified? Can anyone attend?
A: The course is best-suited for anyone who is qualified to become an IFM Certified Practitioner. It is also best-suited for practitioners who have prescribing permissions, but anyone who has attended AFMCP can attend.

Q: What will happen at the program?
A: Participants will prepare (in advance) an IFM Timeline and Matrix from two patients in their own practices. These will be presented to peers in small groups facilitated by experienced functional medicine practitioners. Industry members of the functional medicine ecosystem will present TED-talk style presentations of the latest trends in functional medicine at the conclusion of days one and two.

Q: What do I need to prepare? How much time will it take to prepare? What resources are you offering to help me prepare? Are there any recommended case types?
A: Participants will prepare an IFM Timeline and Matrix for two patients they have seen in their practice. It is estimated this will take one to two hours of preparatory work per patient, so two to four hours total. We will provide instructions via a brief online learning course, and there will also be a webinar that presents these instructions with a Q&A session. It’s kind of like a simpler version of the process required for the IFMCP Case Study, which is a certification requirement.

Q: Why should I attend this program?
A:

  • To elevate your clinical skills in a way that cannot be done with AFMCP and the APMs alone.
  • This is the mentoring experience that you have always asked for.
  • You may meet other practitioners with whom you want to work/collaborate.
  • You will interact with IFM’s most talented and inspiring educators.
  • Experienced educators will walk through case presentations with you and discuss their specific product preferences around lab and supplements.
  • You will have industry representatives on site to answer your questions.
  • You will meet like-minded professionals and feel connected to a new community.
  • Spending three days with six other learners/facilitators is a powerful learning experience.

Q: Will this training show on my Find a Practitioner listing?
A: Yes.

Q: Do I get a certificate at the end?
A: Yes, you will receive a certificate of completion for the course.

Q: Why is this only offered onsite?
A: A “Required Residential Experience” (RRE) is the industry standard for fellowships and other certification programs of this depth. This single RRE of three days is much less than is required in comparable programs. While this is not required at this time, there is no substitute for the inspiration and intangibles of the onsite experience, and every IFM Certified Practitioner should have that opportunity at least once in their training.

Q: Will it ever be offered online? I can’t/don’t want to travel. What are my options?
A: We are not planning on offering the program online at this time.

Q: What are the learning objectives?
A: Demonstrate competency presenting an IFM Timeline and Matrix of two patients from your practice. Demonstrate the ability to follow the GOTOIT method in the clinical care of these patients.

Q: Will this help me with my IFMCP Case Report? With my IFMCP exam prep? May I use this case for my IFMCP case report?
A: Yes, it is excellent practice for the IFMCP Case Report, though it is not designed to help with the Written Exam preparation. And yes, the same patient may be used for your IFMCP case report.

Q: If I do not have prescribing privileges, what are the benefits for me in attending the industry presentations? I am unable to prescribe or order labs, so is that content irrelevant to me?
A: You will gain knowledge not just of labs, but other supplements, services, devices, etc. If you plan to practice in a collaborative care team in a functional medicine practice, all of this is relevant.

Q: Will there be exhibitors?
A: Yes, over a dozen nutraceutical, laboratory, and practice management companies will be represented in the exhibit hall. The exhibit hall will be open during breaks.

Q: Will I receive recordings?
A: No. Due to the nature of the content—clinicians presenting cases and industry leaders presenting the latest functional medicine tools, recordings are not feasible.

Q: Can I leave early?
A: Due to the small-group format, we encourage you to stay for the entire program out of respect for your fellow learners in the group sessions. There are two opportunities this year to attend if the first dates don’t allow you to stay for the entire program.

Q: What is the Registration Policy?
A: Program materials are delivered to you through your personal IFM online account. For this reason, you may not register multiple people or someone other than yourself. No registrations will be taken after one week before the conference. Registration deadlines are as follows:

  • April CST: 4:00 pm PT Friday, April 15, 2022
  • July CST: 4:00 pm PT Friday, July 1, 2022
  • October CST: 4:00 pm PT Friday, September 30, 2022

Q: What is the Cancellation Policy?
A: Cancellations must be received in writing no later than two weeks before the conference to be eligible for a full refund. Cancellations received between two weeks and two days before are eligible for a refund less a $200 cancellation fee. Tuition is non-transferable. Failure to appear at the program with no prior written cancellation will result in complete forfeiture of tuition (nonrefundable, nontransferable, no exceptions).

Cancellation requests must be received by email to Jenniferstroh@ifm.org or 253.661.3065. IFM will reply with a written acknowledgement. Cancellation deadlines are as follows:

  • April CST: 4:00 pm PT Friday, April 8, and 4:00 pm PT Wednesday, April 20, 2022
  • July CST: 4:00 pm PT Friday, June 24, and 4:00 pm PT Wednesday, July 6, 2022
