Today’s Landscape

Energy drives all biologic activity—within individual atoms and molecules, as part of cellular physiology, up through organ-system and whole-person functioning, and, ultimately, the entire biosphere. The last 20 years have brought us dramatic breakthroughs in understanding about how mitochondria work and what they require for enduring optimal function. Genetic and epigenetic vulnerabilities have been discovered; the effects of toxic environmental exposures on energy production have been revealed; and connections between dysregulation in energy production and many clinical conditions have been described.

Physiology is one side of the coin, but we are also learning about the larger energy landscape, including the mechanisms underlying the clinical effects of magnetic fields and microcurrent, hands-on therapies such as manipulation and craniosacral, acupuncture, and the profound power of the therapeutic partnership.

IFM’s energy Advanced Practice Module

This Advanced Practice Module will investigate the science of mitochondrial function and dysfunction, the impact of oxidative stress, as well as nutritional and lifestyle influences on both health and disease. Clinicians will learn how to regenerate compromised mitochondrial function and how to address the varied underlying causes of fatigue, depression, headache, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. Evidence-based modalities to address pain will be introduced, and the profound potential of the healing partnership will be both explored and experienced.

Clinical competencies to be mastered through the module:

  • Define and understand the importance of energy regulation and mitochondrial function from a clinical perspective.
  • Employ advanced approaches to history, physical examination, and laboratory assessments to improve the recognition of clinical syndromes related to mitochondrial function and energy regulation.
  • Individualize functional treatment protocols to address mitochondrial dysfunction and increased demand for cellular energy.
  • Identify common antecedents, triggers, and mediators underlying mitochondrial dysfunction and increased energy demand in clinical syndromes and map energy regulation issues to the Functional Medicine clinical matrix.
  • Develop and apply a personalized approach to preparing for clinical encounters.
  • Improve clinical outcomes through the intentional development of true therapeutic partnerships with patients.
  • Recognize when to use or refer patients for physical medicine treatments and various electrical and mind-body modalities to address pain, improve energy regulation, support structural integrity, and tissue healing.
  • Design and implement interventions to mitigate the effects of oxidative stress, inflammation, and structural changes on mitochondrial function.
  • Apply functional “Clinical Considerations” to more effectively evaluate and personalize treatments for fatigue, chronic pain, depression, headaches, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Practice Implementation

Addressing the Need for Practice Implementation Learning

In our recent study, Functional Medicine Practices, Opportunities, Challenges, and Emerging Trends, we uncovered a common need among practitioners for robust practice implementation training. In response, we have begun to enhance each of our Advanced Practice Modules (APMs) with additional content on translating the module into action. New presentations will explore topics ranging from clinical pearls to billing and coding compliance for insurance-based practices.

BUSINESS AND CLINICAL STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE IMPLEMENTATION

Optional Evening Session
The Business and Clinical Strategies for Successful Practice Implementation series is a set of 90-minute informational sessions, each of which outline the tools, laboratory testing, billing and coding, and legal considerations for implementing the Functional Medicine techniques discussed during the conference. Each session will include presentations by experts as well as a Q&A session that will allow practitioners to ask specific questions about billing, coding, and legal advice. These optional sessions will be offered in the evening of the second day of the APM conference.

The series is specific to the content taught at IFM. Materials, tools, and resources used will correspond to theories, therapies, treatment modalities, and considerations specific to practitioners trained in IFM’s approach to Functional Medicine and relevant APMs.

Registration Policy

Program materials and CME certificates for both in-person and live-stream programs are delivered to you through your personal IFM online account. For this reason, you may not register multiple people or someone other than yourself. Registration at regular tuition will close 4:00 pm PT, Friday, July 19, 2019. Late registration tuition includes a $300 processing fee. Late registration in-person at the conference (subject to space) will incur a $300 processing fee. No live-stream registrations will be taken after 4:00 pm PT, Friday, July 19, 2019.

Live-Stream Participation Policy

Live participation from July 21-23, 2019, is required for this IFM program. You must participate in the broadcast by logging in to your unique IFM account to receive CME credit and to fulfill IFM Certification Program requirements. Live-stream log-in information is unique and cannot be shared. Those who do not log in through their own IFM account during the live broadcast will be removed from the program and will not receive program materials, recordings, CME credit, or credit toward the IFM Certification Program.

DCs: Please note that DCs may or may not be eligible for CME through live stream. For a complete list of states and approval hours, please contact IFM or check with your state board.

in-person Participation Policy

You must check in and be present in person at the in-person program to receive CME credit and to fulfill IFM Certification Program requirements. Only registered attendees with name badges will be allowed in the conference room. Children and unregistered spouses may not attend the program or sponsored events.
