Today’s Landscape

In the 21st century, two things have become increasingly apparent: first, we are exposed to a more complex array of toxic compounds in our air, water, and food than ever before. Second, it has been recognized that an individual’s ability to detoxify (i.e. biotransform and excrete) toxic substances is of critical importance to overall health. While the concept that toxicants accumulate in the body and are the cause of various health problems has long been a fundamental tenet of traditional healthcare systems around the world, we have learned a great deal in recent years about how toxicants and toxins affect us, where they originate, and how to improve our ability to detoxify in a toxic world. Understanding toxicity and taking practical steps to improve biotransformation and elimination are essential and critical pieces in any integrative approach to your patients’ health and well-being.

IFM’s Environmental Health (Formerly Detox) Advanced Practice Module

There is persuasive evidence that even low-level toxic exposures contribute to the development of a variety of chronic health conditions, including fatigue, endocrine disruption, and chronic degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s. Given the ubiquitous nature of chemicals in the environment, it is likely that the single exposure model of toxicology is more the exception than the rule. It is therefore critical for clinicians to learn how to assess both exposures and total toxic load to appropriately assess and address each individual’s toxicological situation.

Program Highlights

Our expert educator team reviews the foundational biochemistry and genetics associated with biotransformation pathways, connects organ system dysfunctions to potential toxic exposures, and details the useful laboratory evaluations for evaluating toxicant exposure levels and subsequent physiologic stresses in patients. Once these important clinical connections are made, the team will detail specific treatment approaches. This program also uses a case-based, integrated approach to effectively deliver the tools necessary for clinicians to diagnose and treat the toxic component of their patients’ total health pictures.

CME Information

IFM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

MD/DO: The Institute for Functional Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 18.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ABIM MOC Points Available: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 18.5 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

DC: IFM will submit an application to Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) who will apply to all states, except Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. For a complete list of states and approval hours, please contact IFM.

ND: Generally, naturopathic state licensing boards accept continuing education courses accredited through the ACCME. Please contact your state naturopathic board to inquire if CME credits from ACCME-accredited organizations are accepted.

Nursing Professional: For the purpose of re-certification with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), contact hours approved through ACCME are accepted. Please contact your state nursing board to inquire if continuing education credits from ACCME-accredited organizations are accepted.

PA: The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts all continuing education credits from organizations accredited by the ACCME. Please contact your state physician assistant board to inquire if continuing education credits from ACCME-accredited organizations are accepted.

Acupuncturist: IFM is a continuing education provider (provider #0232) of the California Acupuncture Board (CAB). IFM will submit an application to CAB for 18.5 Category 1 hours. Per the Recertification Handbook of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), courses approved by a state acupuncture regulatory board are eligible to submit with the re-certification application. Please contact your Board to inquire if continuing education credits approved by the CAB are accepted. Note: California acupuncturists must attend this course in full to receive CPEUs. Partial credit is not available.

RDThe Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) automatically accepts CME courses accredited for AMA PRA Category 1 creditsTM through the ACCME. Therefore, pre-approval is not required of IFM. Please check with your state licensing board to inquire if prior approval by CDR is required to obtain continuing education credits for an activity despite this circumstance.

Other: Please contact your healthcare licensing board to inquire if continuing education credits from ACCME-accredited organizations are recognized and accepted toward fulfilling your continuing education requirements.

*CME credits are subject to change.
