Today’s Landscape

Modern science has validated what ancient healing traditions have known for centuries: the GI tract has a central role in chronic, systemic disease. From intestinal pathogens and allergens, to intestinal permeability and imbalances in colonic microbiota, gut dysfunction compromises a patient’s health and diminishes vitality. It is often the first place to start in improving overall health.

In the United States, more than 70 million people suffer some form of gastrointestinal (GI) disorder. The relationship between gastrointestinal dysfunction and chronic disease is multifaceted, compelling, and complex. It is clear that when the normal integrity of the GI tract is compromised, this can result in distant systemic complaints even in the absence of overt GI symptoms.

IFM’s GI Advanced Practice Module

This Advanced Practice Module takes a whole systems approach to evaluating and treating not only local gastrointestinal disease, but many systemic diseases that are linked to GI dysfunction.

This course will supply you with the foundational background, insight, and in-depth clinical thinking to confidently work up and treat patients who may present with conditions, signs, and symptoms indicative of gastrointestinal dysfunction. We will discuss in detail the important laboratory evaluations to be considered, the appropriate clinical connections that must be made, and the treatment approaches that should be used.

Practice Implementation

Addressing the Need for Practice Implementation Learning

In our recent study, Functional Medicine Practices, Opportunities, Challenges, and Emerging Trends, we uncovered a common need among practitioners for robust practice implementation training. In response, we have begun to enhance each of our Advanced Practice Modules (APMs) with additional content on translating the module into action. New presentations will explore topics ranging from clinical pearls to billing and coding compliance for insurance-based practices.

BUSINESS AND CLINICAL STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE IMPLEMENTATION

Optional Evening Session
The Business and Clinical Strategies for Successful Practice Implementation series is a set of 90-minute informational sessions, each of which outline the tools, laboratory testing, billing and coding, and legal considerations for implementing the Functional Medicine techniques discussed during the conference. Each session will include presentations by experts as well as a Q&A session that will allow practitioners to ask specific questions about billing, coding, and legal advice. These optional sessions will be offered in the evening of the second day of the APM conference.

The series is specific to the content taught at IFM. Materials, tools, and resources used will correspond to theories, therapies, treatment modalities, and considerations specific to practitioners trained in IFM’s approach to Functional Medicine and relevant APMs.

Practitioner Testimonials

One of the things that distinguishes this module is its focus on practical tools for assessing and treating GI and systemic issues by looking at underlying mechanisms.
