Today’s Landscape

It is estimated that 25 million to 50 million Americans suffer from autoimmune diseases. Functional medicine teaches that immune imbalance, while often resulting from a genetic disposition, will generally arise in the context of one or more of the following: the habitual consumption of a proinflammatory diet; food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances; microbial infections; hormonal imbalances; nutritional insufficiencies; and xenobiotic exposure.

Nearly 100 different diseases have been classified as autoimmune in nature, with 40 more suspected. While these conditions tend to be viewed as separate entities, a broader perspective may reveal that shared mechanisms are the underlying cause of these maladies. It is abundantly clear that environmental factors have important parts to play in the underlying etiology. In rheumatoid arthritis, for instance, genetic factors have been shown to be responsible for less than 50% of the risk. This means that environmental factors—and gene-environment interactions—must play a significant role. Despite this understanding, less attention has been focused on determining these other important causal factors.

Functional Medicine Advanced Practice Modules™ (APM) Immune

This course will focus on chronic inflammation, systemic influences on the immune system, and the consequent dysfunction that may ensue. The Immune APM will supply you with an in-depth understanding of underlying immune mechanisms and enable you to develop effective interventions even in the absence of a conventional diagnosis.

What You Will Learn

At the Immune APM you will learn how to:

  • Identify different types of chronic inflammation and apply personalized treatments.
  • Recognize that chronic inflammation is a root cause of nearly every chronic disease and achieve better outcomes by addressing it.
  • Better diagnose systemic inflammation by recognizing subtle and often overlooked elements in the history and evaluation.
  • Determine the root causes of each patient’s chronic inflammation to personalize treatment.
  • Explain in plain language to patients how immune dysfunction is contributing to their current conditions to help motivate them and improve adherence.
  • Identify subtle and often overlooked clues on conventional and advanced laboratory biomarkers that indicate inflammation or immune dysfunction.
  • Develop more personalized treatments for chronic inflammation and immune dysfunction for each patient that include dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and botanical treatments.

IFM and Clinical Education (UK)

IFM is proud to partner with Clinical Education

Clinical Education is an education organization based in the United Kingdom that brings a range of educational experiences to healthcare professionals in the UK and EU. They have a hard-earned reputation as an independent provider of expert-led nutrition and lifestyle medicine education.

Clinical Education and IFM have worked closely together since hosting the inaugural AFMCP UK in 2011 and the collaboration has grown stronger each year. Clinical Education sponsors and organizes IFM educational events for practitioners and clinicians who are unable to attend IFM programs held in the United States. They contribute rich clinical experience in the production of regionally adapted content and presentations, creating an invaluable experience for practitioners by keenly connecting the presented material to practice implementation for international audiences. This partnership continues to have a significant impact on our mission of the global widespread adoption of functional medicine.

Continuing Education Credit Information

AMA PRA Category 1 creditsTM are not available for IFM courses held in conjunction with non-accredited organizations. A certificate of attendance indicating hours of participation will still be awarded. International registrants may send their certificate to Clinical Education for CPD credits from the following professional bodies for Nutritional Therapists. These professional bodies have approved Immune Europe for 21 CPD Credits.

  • The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT).
  • The Naturopathic Nutrition Association (NNA).
  • Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (ANP).
  • The CPD Certification Service (CPDUK).

Additional Information:

  • Medical Doctors:
    • The Royal Colleges of Physicians approve external CPD events for post-training physicians. External events are defined as educational events which are targeted towards physicians from multiple hospitals and trusts. External events may be regional, national or international in character. The Royal College of Physicians have recommended that medical doctors attending the Immune Europe training claim the hours attended as ‘Self-Accreditation’. They may record a maximum CPD educational activity of 21. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
    • Under the CPD guidelines issued by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, 1 credit per hour attended may be applied to your annual CPD educational activities requirements. Attendees utilising their respective royal colleges CPD mechanism will record this event under ‘Self-Accreditation’ and ensure that as per usual they complete the requirements to describe the relevant activities for their clinical life and their reflective learning assessments are recorded.
  • Others: If you are seeking approval for CPD credits from your own professional organisation and you are unsure about the status of these awarding bodies in relation to your own CPD/CME requirements, please contact your own professional bodies in the first instance and, if required, please ask them to contact Clinical Education for additional information.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I have more questions, who should I ask?
Please contact info@IFM.org with any additional questions.

Who is organising this program?
IFM is organising this Immune Advanced Practice Module, Europe. Clinical Education is partnering with IFM to provide critically important regionalization for the UK/EMEA region.

Is the Module the same as the one run in the US time zone?
The Immune Advanced Practice Module, Europe will be run at the same level and high standards as the US broadcast. The presentations will be adjusted to account for variations in the language, laboratory profiles and medications. The EU/UK has a different regulatory network relating to food supplements than the US and some changes to the content will be made to reflect that. In addition, the tests discussed will be ones that are obtainable in the UK through relevant laboratories or their distributors, details of which will be hosted by the Clinical Education Virtual Exhibit Hall.

Who is the course designed for?
Functional medicine has long encouraged an integrative approach to clinical education. This course is for healthcare practitioners who are already qualified in a core discipline and applicants/attendees must be a graduate of an accredited medical, osteopathic, chiropractic, naturopathic, homeopathic, dietetics, acupuncture, pharmacy, physiotherapy or nutritional therapy programme. If you have any doubts you may contact IFM Customer Relations. Previous training in functional medicine is desirable but not essential; a good understanding of the role nutrition plays in health is also helpful.

Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements for this course does not guarantee acceptance into IFM’s Certification Program. Healthcare practitioners who would like to continue their functional medicine education with IFM and seek certification will need to apply directly to IFM to have their eligibility determined. You can find our eligibility requirements here. Every application is evaluated on educational background, program degree, regulatory status, and clinical experience.

If the presentations are recorded, why do I have to attend live?
You must check in and be present for the duration of the Live Rebroadcast to receive CPD credit and to fulfill IFM Certification Program requirements. This has been pre-approved by IFM as eligible for the Certification Program.

I want to talk about the course with someone, who do I contact?
