Today’s Landscape

Energy drives all biologic activity—within individual atoms and molecules, as part of cellular physiology, up through organ-system and whole-person functioning and, ultimately, the entire biosphere. The last 20 years have brought us dramatic breakthroughs in understanding how mitochondria work and what they require for enduring optimal function. Genetic and epigenetic vulnerabilities have been discovered; the effects of toxic environmental exposures on energy production have been revealed; and connections between dysregulation in energy production and many clinical conditions have been described.

Physiology is one side of the coin, but we are also learning about the larger energy landscape, including the mechanisms underlying the clinical effects of magnetic fields and microcurrent, hands-on therapies such as manipulation, craniosacral, and acupuncture, and the profound power of the therapeutic partnership.

Functional Medicine Advanced Practice Modules® (APM) Bioenergetics

This Advanced Practice Module will investigate the science of mitochondrial function and dysfunction, the impact of oxidative stress, and nutritional and lifestyle influences on both health and disease. Clinicians will learn how to regenerate compromised mitochondrial function and how to address the varied underlying causes of fatigue, depression, headache, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Evidence-based modalities to address pain will be introduced, and the profound potential of the healing partnership will be both explored and experienced.
